There’s been moments for everyone who run or manage a business while driving home, reading the technology news in a newspaper or even at bedtime(!), to ask these questions: “How internet can help me to make more money? Shall I improve my presence on internet? Is what I am doing enough to keep the business alive in next couple of years…?“.
These are very common questions these days as technology speeds up and makes it hard to always stay tuned with the latest updates. You can’t put an end to this challenge in your mind, but the problem is that if you can’t find reasonable answers for your questions, you’ll get frustrated and you might end up with a decision which doesn’t actually help you. Believe me! As result, your competitors may take over only because they had good advise and could catch the new opportunities. We all know what it means…!
How about we change a little bit in the way we think! Let’s forget about all of these questions and start with asking ourselves “Do I need to use any of these new technologies?”. You might answer me “what a silly question… Of course I do”. Well, just write down the most important reason you think. In my opinion if your answer is “Because everyone else is using… ” or “Because my competitors are using…” I am afraid to say you are wrong! I’ve heard these type of answers many times and this is one of the moments people hate me when I try to prove them this is not how they think! I am not saying you shouldn’t pick any new idea – as result of the recent technologies – but always think of the real benefits. Sometimes technology over-complicates a business with adding more costs and wasting hours to just adopting the old-fashioned process.
Assume that you own a real estate which put all your listings on your web site. If you decide to create mobile version of your site or an IPhone application which user can view the listings in the most proper format on their phones, that sounds very rational. But what if you owns a car repair center and are willing to create a Facebook page for your business! Well… not sure if anyone else than your family and friends will like your page.
There are a few key questions you can start thinking of , even if you are already utilizing any of current online services:
- How this service will facilitate business process.
- Is there enough evidence outside for my field of activity which prove the efficiency?
- Do I need it as-is or customization is required?
- What is my idea for using the new service to be distinct?
The more you dig into your needs, the more you will be convinced and when you get to this point to have enough reasons to -at least- convince yourself that your business requires another front window in internet, then you can return to the most important question: Where Should I Begin?
Now sit back and think of your business needs. I’ll get back shortly to tell you what’s the first step.
